Alaskan Salmon Animation

An animation project dedicated to the 5 Alaska Pacific salmon. These fish move and open their mouths in a playful style similar to that of the classic Big Mouth Billy Bass toy.

Each of Alaska’s five salmon species has its own unique look and story, but they all share something remarkable. Salmon are anadromous, meaning they hatch in freshwater, migrate to the ocean to grow, and then return to the exact stream where they were born to spawn. Their bodies are equipped to handle both freshwater and ocean water thanks to osmoregulation, a process that balances the salt to water in their body, even when their environment changes. These fish then are able to find their way home to the exact river, stream, or lake where they hatched to spawn and die. This ability is called Natal Homing, using magnetic navigation.
